In 3000 BC, cats were considered sacred creatures during the time of the ancient Egyptians. Even black female cats were considered goddesses. Laws were even made to protect cats from sickness and death. Combined with their independent, do-it-yourself, 'stubborn' and 'sneaky' character, and their overpopulation in Europe, cats fell out of favor. In those years, those who kept cats at home were poor and old women who lived alone. Again, those were the years when the belief in wizards and witches turned into hysteria all over Europe. Fearful folk tales were produced about these women who kept black cats practiced black magic and black cats turned into demons at night. When the witch thing turned into paranoia, many poor women were burned with their cats. In France, thousands of cats were burned each month until King Louis XIII outlawed the practice.
